Thoren
Caging Systems, Inc., is a pioneer and worldwide leader of innovative caging
systems for the laboratory animal industry. Thoren was the first to develop
warm surface plastic caging in 1953, and in 1978, in conjunction with The Jackson
Laboratory, Thoren brought Positive Individual Ventilation (PIV) to the forefront
of the industry with the introduction of the Maxi-Miser
PIV Caging System. Today, PIV technology is an established industry standard.
For over 40 years, Thoren Caging Systems' total commitment to high quality product design and customer satisfaction has earned us a place in the top research facilities throughout the world. Thoren products meet "The Guide for The Care and Use of Laboratory Animals" as established by The Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources.
Thoren's Maxi-Miser PIV Caging System supplies Positive Individual Ventilation to each cage position. The system provides approximately one cage exchange of air per minute (depending upon static pressures), supplying air directly into each cage while exhausting spent air, animal odors, dander and feed dust from the cage. Maxi-Miser minimizes problems associated with the buildup of temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide and ammonia. Thoren's PIV technology also gives welcome relief to allergy sensitive staff members by reducing cage contamination in the room.
The
Maxi-Miser PIV System has been designed to operate efficiently from either the
laboratory central ventilating system or through Thoren's Blower
Filter Modules. These easily detachable, self-contained Blower Filter
Modules feature 99.99% efficient HEPA filters and
contain dampers on both the supply and exhaust systems. Maxi-Miser Blower Filter
Modules are available in bottom mount or top mount positions. Each 120 volt,
single-phase 60 hertz unit draws 4 amperes at full load. (240 volt, 50 hertz
available upon request.)
Modular in design, the Maxi-Miser System can be constructed as a fixed or mobile unit using four basic cage designs: Small Mouse - Rat - Weaning - or Duplex. All units are available with automatic watering systems, bottle watering or combination of the two.

The
Maxi-Miser Mobile PIV Caging System consists of the stainless steel rack with
air plenum and hollow, three compartment, stainless steel shelves. The unit
provides positive or negative cage pressure relative to the room, and is equipped
with separate Magnehelic gauges to monitor static pressure on both supply and
exhaust. Stainless steel construction and easily detached Magnehelic gauges
allow the system to be fully washed and autoclaved. Quick disconnect clamps
provide easy removal of both shelves and plenum plates prior to cleaning. Blower
Filter Modules are also autoclavable, having been designed with detachable electrical
components. Wash racks are available (illustration below).
Protecting the cage from the room and the room from the cage is the Maxi-Miser Mobile Change Station. The Maxi-Miser Mobile Change Station creates an air curtain of high velocity air and a work area of low velocity, class 100 air that minimizes the interaction of air from the cage to the room and the room to the cage. A large work surface makes cage changes easy. The unit is available with an optional, easy to reach feed hopper.
